Michele Dagavarian-Miller, a native New Yorker and daughter of Met Opera singer Norma Cazanjian, got her BFA, magna cum laude, from Hofstra University. She performed on Broadway in two hit musicals: "Runaways" (Joseph Papp, Producer) and "Fiddler On The Roof" (Jerome Robbins, Director). She is an accomplished singer, pianist, flutist and guitarist. After moving to Canada with her family, she served as Artisitc Director of Edmonton Musical Theatre during which time record growth in enrollment and status in the community was achieved. During that time, she created an Award Winning and ground-breaking musical theatre program for students with Down syndrome, which also won her the Mayor's Citizenship Award. Michele has been writing music and lyrics, teleplays and plays all her life. She's created a successful, long running improv class for senior citizens-- the inspiration for her series of books, "Geri-Antics!: Monologues and Scenes" (pub. pending.) After winning a First Place Honourable Mention Award in the prestigious Alberta Playwriting Competition for "21: Growing Up Down" (a poignant and often hilarious story of a young Down syndrome woman's dream of singing on Broadway), she's decided to publish the musical for the handicap-able community in North America and the UK.

        21: Growing Up Down

21: Growing Up Down

Synopsis:
Jane, a 22 year old girl with Down syndrome dreams of being a singer-dancer in a Broadway show. She lives with her divorced mother, Elaine, (marquis talent) who is terribly afraid of being alone and clings tightly to the daughter she loves so. New to town is Max, a 24 year old Down syndrome boy and his father, Bob, (marquis talent) who recently lost his wife to cancer. Bob is in the upper one percentile wealthy, and an alcoholic. Jane meets Max at her musical theatre class with 8 other Down syndrome students; a romance develops, not without its many obstacles. Without her mother's knowledge or blessing, Jane gets cast in a local musical revue. In the 'all is lost' moment, she quits the show, breaks up with Max, and blows up at her mother. Jane, Elaine, Max and Bob experience the growth, their respective character arcs, during act 3 of the play. Big musical ending.

Notes:
2 Down syndrome leads have SINGER DOUBLES who sing on stage with them, i.e., it is how they hear themselves sing. Most people w/ DS have difficulty singing a wide range of notes. Also, the mother of the DS girl and father of the DS boy must be marquis talent. APN Award Winning Musical. [agent for this play:
